Asphalt shingles remain one of the most common types of roofing systems used across the country. With their durability and performance against various weather conditions, it certainly is hard to ignore the value for money that this type of roofing brings. But much like other roof types, asphalt shingles may also be prone to certain issues – for instance, granule loss.
These granules are added to the shingles to protect the roofing material from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. They can also increase the roof’s fire resistance. Over time, shingle granules naturally shed, especially when the roof is approaching the end of its lifespan. But sometimes granule loss could also be a sign of a roofing issue.
New Roofing
Granule loss can be noticed in newly installed roofs – it’s normal. During the manufacturing process, granules are embedded into the asphalt to provide an additional layer of protection for the shingles. However, excess granules could remain linked to the embedded granules and then fall off during packaging, shipping or installation. In this case, you can expect an insignificant amount of granules shedding from your new shingles for some time. If your shingles don’t seem to stop losing granules, or you simply want to be reassured, it’s best to talk to your roofing contractors. They can also check the embedded granules for you to see if they are still intact.
Old Roofing
As mentioned earlier, it’s only natural for roofs to lose granules as they age. This is because the bond between the granules and the asphalt shingles loosens up towards the end of the roof’s lifespan, causing the granules to fall off. That said, this is likely an indication that your roofing is due for replacement. Enlist professional residential roofing services so that your roof can be assessed and replaced as soon as possible.
Blistering
Blistering can be the result of roof aging, wear and tear, or storm damage. It can further lead to granule loss. So, if you notice excessive amounts of granules in your gutters or on the ground, you should call your trusted roofer.
