Keeping the Exterior and Garden Safe During a Roof Replacement Project
A roof replacement project will require careful preparation. But this isn’t limited to trimming back any tree branches near your roof (to give the contractor easier access), mowing the lawn beforehand (to make stray nails more visible) or parking your car across the street (to protect it from flying roof debris). You also have to prepare, and take measures, to keep your home exterior and garden intact during the actual replacement process.
- Collaborate with your roofer. Of course, this isn’t a task you should take on by yourself. You’ll need to make sure both you and your roofer are on the same page about preventing damage to specific your home exterior and landscape. Make sure to direct the person’s attention to areas that will need special protection, like say, your prized rose bushes, the newly planted trees by the side of your home or the vegetable garden in the backyard.
- Keep things secure and covered. Before installation day, take the time to move any items that are normally placed near your home. These include outdoor furniture, garden and lawn equipment, or children’s toys. Store them somewhere else in the meantime. But if you don’t have the additional space, just cover them properly with a tarp to keep them safe. The same goes for any plants and shrubs directly beneath the roof or close to the siding.
- Take into account the placement of the dumpster. Because it should be close enough to your home that the roofing crew can easily access it, the dumpster is usually parked in the driveway. But you won’t want it leaving any dents or scrapes on the driveway, so make sure there are plywood sheets under it. The same goes for the new roofing materials. When the driveway is used as their staging area, the materials should also be laid on some plywood to prevent damage.
