For many years, homeowners have been gravitating towards paintable, maintenance-free siding like steel, aluminum and vinyl. Recently, composite siding has also become a viable and durable options for homes. It has the traditional look people want, but with improved hail and moisture resistance.
One great composite siding choices for homeowners is LP® SmartSide®.
LP® Smartside®
Louisiana Pacific (LP) SmartSide was first manufactured in 1997. The creators focused on creating a material that is moisture resistant unlike the previous Oriented Strand Board (OSB) siding product, which had a problem with rot and swelling.
This version of an OSB siding was improved by coating the wood flakes with zinc before they are pressed into siding with methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) resins and marine waxes.
LP can be installed 1 inch from where the roof line touches the wall to maintain its warranty unlike James Hardie® that requires a 2-inch gap.
LP Pros
LP SmartSide offers superior moisture protection and durability, and it is 16 feet long. It weighs lighter than Hardie, and you can save more with its installation as no special cutting tools are required to trim it. On an impact test done by NASA, it was shown that LP is more impact resistant than fiber cement.
